Introduction

If you live with technology — and at this point that means almost everyone — you've probably noticed something. The list of things that need attention keeps getting longer. Your phone wants to update. The router blinks differently than it used to. Your spouse is locked out of an account. The smart bulb in the dining room won't connect to Wi-Fi after the power blip. Somewhere, a printer is offline for reasons you don't understand.

This guide is for the person in the household who ends up handling most of it — usually because no one else volunteers. You don't have to be a professional to keep your household's technology in good shape. You do need a small amount of structure: a few habits, a few rules of thumb, and a clear sense of when something is outside what you should try to fix yourself.

We wrote this guide because we believe customers should be able to do most of what we do, on their own, if they want to. The information matters more than the upsell. If you read this and decide you've got it covered, great — you're better off than 90 percent of households. If you read it and decide you'd rather not, we're here too.


1. What's actually in your household network?

The starting point is understanding what's on your network, because nearly every problem you'll see touches it somehow.

Modem vs router. These often live in the same plastic box, which makes it confusing. The modem is what connects to your internet provider — the cable from the wall plugs into it. The router is what creates your Wi-Fi network and shares the internet to all your devices. In many homes today, both functions are combined in a single unit from your ISP. If you've got two separate boxes blinking next to each other, the one cabled to the wall is the modem.

The Wi-Fi network itself. Most modern routers create more than one network at the same time. They use different radio bands — 2.4 GHz (longer range, slower, more crowded), 5 GHz (shorter range, faster, less crowded), and on newer routers also 6 GHz (very short range, very fast, basically empty for now). Many routers combine all the bands under one network name and let your device pick. Older "dual-band" routers expose two networks side by side. Neither approach is wrong.

Guest networks are free and useful. Almost every router supports a separate "guest" network with a different password. Use it for visitors, smart-home devices you don't fully trust, and anything that doesn't need to talk to the rest of your stuff. Your laptop on the main network and the guest network are isolated from each other, which limits the blast radius if something on the guest side gets compromised.

Devices that connect. Walk through your home in your head. Each of these is on your network: phones, tablets, laptops, desktops, smart TVs, streaming sticks, game consoles, printers, doorbell cameras, indoor cameras, smart thermostats, smart bulbs, smart plugs, smart locks, voice assistants, e-readers, fitness watches that sync over Wi-Fi, baby monitors. People typically underestimate the count by half. The number is rarely below 15.

Try the inventory exercise. Open your router's admin app (Eero, Google Home, Nest Wifi, ASUS, Netgear, etc.) and look at the list of connected devices. Some you'll recognize. Some will be named things like "ESP_4F2A8B" or "Generic IoT Device." That second category is where surprises live.


2. The five basics that prevent 80 percent of problems

Most household tech problems come from a small handful of root causes. Address these five things and you'll dodge most of what people call about.

1. Enable automatic updates everywhere. Your operating system, your browser, your apps, your router firmware. Most devices ship with auto-update on by default; the few that don't (some smart-home gear, older routers) need a manual reminder. Reboot computers and routers at least weekly — many updates won't fully apply until restart.

2. Use a password manager and unique passwords. This is the single highest-leverage change you can make. Pick one of: 1Password, Bitwarden, iCloud Keychain, Google Password Manager. Generate unique passwords for every site. Turn on multi-factor authentication anywhere it's offered — at minimum for email, banking, and anything tied to your phone. Stop reusing your one good password across 47 sites. It feels harder for a week and then it's normal.

3. Back up the things you can't recreate. The traditional "3-2-1" rule is three copies of important data, on two different kinds of storage, with one copy offsite. In practice: photos in iCloud or Google Photos; documents in OneDrive, Dropbox, or iCloud; an external hard drive at home that you plug in once a month. You don't need to back up things you can re-download (apps, music in streaming services). You do need to back up things that exist only on your devices — photos, videos, tax records, personal documents.

4. Antivirus: use what's built in. Windows Defender on Windows and the built-in macOS protection on Mac are good enough for most households. Do not stack three antivirus programs; they conflict and slow your machine down. If a website tells you "your computer is infected!" with a pop-up, that's almost always the scam, not a real warning.

5. Email hygiene. Most security incidents start with email. Be skeptical of unexpected attachments. Hover over links to see where they actually go before clicking. Banks do not text you to confirm transactions through a link. Anyone asking you to buy gift cards is a scammer, period. When in doubt, contact the supposed sender through a phone number or website you already trust, not through anything in the suspicious message.


3. How to know when something's wrong

Computers don't usually fail dramatically. They get weird first. Watching for the weird is more useful than waiting for the smoke.

Sluggishness without a clear cause. Your laptop has been fast for a year and is suddenly slow on websites it used to handle fine, or the fans run loud when you're not doing much. Sometimes this is an update installing in the background and resolves itself in 30 minutes. If it persists, restart and watch for the same behavior; check what apps started running on their own.

Pop-ups, redirected searches, or new browser toolbars. Especially toolbars you didn't install. Modern Windows and Mac don't show pop-ups for system messages — anything claiming to be a system warning in your browser is from a website, not your computer. New toolbars on Chrome or Safari that you didn't install are bad news.

Unknown devices on your network. When you check your router's device list and see something you can't explain — and your kids and neighbors can't either — investigate. Sometimes it's a forgotten device. Sometimes it's not.

Email from yourself you didn't send. If your sent folder shows messages you don't remember, or your contacts ask why you sent them a weird link — change your email password immediately, sign out all sessions, turn on multi-factor.

Devices you don't recognize logged into your accounts. Most major services (Google, Apple, Microsoft, Facebook) have a "where am I logged in" page. Check it now. Anything you don't recognize, sign out remotely.

When to panic, when to wait, when to ask. If you suspect compromise of email, banking, or anything tied to your identity, panic is appropriate — act fast, change passwords, freeze credit, contact your bank. For most other "this looks weird" moments, take 30 seconds to restart the device. That solves a surprising number of issues. If the weirdness persists, that's when to call someone.


4. When to DIY and when to call

Some things in a household network are completely safe to try yourself. Others need a person who knows what they're doing. The line isn't always obvious. Here's a rough split.

Easy DIY. Restart the router (wait 30 seconds before plugging back in). Restart your computer. Run pending updates. Change a password. Run a virus scan. Clear your browser cache. Unplug and replug a printer. Forget a Wi-Fi network on a device and reconnect from scratch.

Get help. Network configuration changes (port forwarding, static IPs, mesh setup). Recovering an account after a security incident. Recovering data from a failing hard drive. Anything where you suspect your devices have been compromised. Anything involving payment fraud or identity theft. Migration of years of data to a new computer.

Never DIY. Power supply replacement on a desktop. Anything where you're staring at exposed mains voltage. Pulling cable through walls or attics if you're not comfortable up there. Lifting heavy server gear by yourself. Anything that genuinely scares you — the fear is information.

The general rule: if the worst outcome of your DIY attempt is "the device doesn't work and I have to call someone anyway," try it. If the worst outcome is "I lose data, get electrocuted, or make things worse," don't.


5. Questions to ask any IT service before hiring them

Whether you talk to us or to anyone else, these questions help you tell the difference between a real service and one that's hoping you don't ask.

  • What's your response time, and what counts as "response"? A response can mean "we acknowledged your ticket" or "a human is working on your problem." Make them say which.
  • Do you carry insurance? Specifically, professional liability (errors and omissions) and cyber liability? Anyone managing technology in your home should have both. Ask to see the certificate.
  • What are the contract terms? Long-term contracts with cancellation penalties are a red flag for household services. The right model is month-to-month with no penalty for leaving.
  • Can you give me references from current customers? If they can't, that means something.
  • What happens to my data when the relationship ends? They should have a clear, written answer — both about data they hold and about software they install.
  • Will I always work with the same person, or with a rotating team? Both can work. The honest answer matters; "you'll always work with our team" is a non-answer.
  • What's explicitly out of scope? Good services tell you up front. Bad services tell you only when you try to use them for something they don't cover.
  • What does your privacy policy say about what your monitoring software collects? They should be able to summarize this without reading off a screen.

6. Building a household tech maintenance routine

You don't need to do a lot. You need to do a little, consistently.

Once a month. Open your router's app and look at the list of connected devices. Anything new that you can't explain? Investigate. Plug in your external backup drive and let it run. Check that auto-update is still enabled on each of your important devices (this gets turned off accidentally more often than you'd think).

Once a quarter. Open your password manager and look at the "compromised passwords" or "reused passwords" list. Most of them have one. Fix the worst three. Open your bank and credit card statements and scan for unfamiliar charges (most people only check the total).

Once a year. Review what insurance covers your tech (homeowner's or renter's policies often cover devices). Retire devices you stopped using. Check that the domain names you own haven't expired and that your old email addresses still work. Renew identity-protection or dark-web monitoring services if you use them.

Set calendar reminders for the monthly and quarterly ones. The annual one usually attaches itself to tax season anyway.


Conclusion

Maintaining a household's technology is a real job. We won't pretend otherwise. The good news is that the job is mostly boring. The actual work — keeping things up to date, watching for the weird, fixing the small stuff before it grows — doesn't require deep expertise. It requires a small amount of attention paid consistently.

Some households genuinely enjoy this work, or have a member who does, or simply don't want to outsource it. That's a great answer. If that's you, this guide should be enough to keep you in good shape for years.

Other households would rather not. They have enough to think about already. They'd rather pay a small, predictable monthly amount to make this someone else's problem. That's also a great answer.

The worst answer is the in-between: knowing something needs attention, not having the time to give it, not having outsourced it either. Indecision is what lets tech debt compound into something painful.

Pick the answer that fits your household. Then move on.
